About Jan

I am a Scottish artist transplanted to the US, my work evokes both the landscape colours and seasonal changes of Scotland and those of my adopted city, Chicago. Inspired by the sparkling waters on Loch Linnhe and Lake Michigan, the sun peeking through the clouds after a storm, flaming sunsets and daylight until almost 11pm in the summertime.

The jewellery I make has less to do with the vagaries of fashion and more to do with feeling in touch with home.

I started beading to add some sparkle to my embroidery work and fell hard for those little sparkly objects. I knit, sew, draw and take photographs, but none of my other artistic pursuits have ever come close to becoming a career.

I have a BA (Hons) from Edinburgh College of Art in Visual Communications (Animation). I’m not sure how much that informs my work here—other than my love of detail, and my goofy sense of humour.

I am a Certified level 1 PMC Artisan, through Precious Metal Clay Connection. I teach PMC and bead weaving classes in the Chicago and Evanston area, and I also offer private tuition. Please contact me for more information.
